Most Common Depression Symptoms

Picture
Everyone has times when they are sad, lose interest, or are anxious.  However, when these feelings persist, it can lead to a number of emotional and even physical problems.  As these feelings grow, the individual may develop difficulty with basic activities like personal hygiene and managing meals.

Depression is a medical condition that can improve with treatment or decline with lack of intervention.

It can begin as a result of a traumatic event like the loss of a loved one, divorce, unemployment, etc.  It can also be a result of a family history of mood disorders.  If as a child you experienced some traumatic event, there can be some lingering feelings that need to be resolved.  Medical conditions can also lead to a depressive state.  Sometimes these are medication induced and sometimes the realization that you are no longer in control of certain bodily functions.

The good news is this is a treatable condition.  There are some medications and certainly therapeutic remedies available.  Here are some of the more common symptoms of clinical depression.
  • Sadness, gloom, excessive crying
  • Feeling of emptiness
  • Outbursts of anger, especially over trivial issues
  • Excessive sleeping or continual insomnia
  • Eating disorders like overeating or reduced appetite
  • Loss of interest in a favorite activity or hobby
  • Slow reactions like speaking or thinking; inability to follow conversations
  • Thoughts or actions of self harm

There can be many differences in how children and adolescents experience depression.  This can include refusing to attend classes, insecurity shown through clinging to a person or object, and eating disorders.  Because of the extensive hormonal changes, teenage depression can sometimes be overlooked.  Some warning signs include sudden poor academic performance, use of recreational drugs or alcohol, and social isolation.

Likewise, older adults may often consider sadness a normal part of the aging process. This is incorrect. Some things to watch for are personality changes, avoiding group activities and gatherings, and, again, self harm.  Abrupt changes in the aging process is a sign that something is  wrong.

If you feel that you are depressed, it is important to seek help from a reputable mental health professional.  If you simply have concerns, start by speaking with a trusted friend, relative, religious leader, or someone whose opinion you value.  There are also toll-free services for you to call and discuss your feelings.  These are manned by impartial but caring individuals who can help you understand your feelings and the next steps to take.

If you are a relative or friend, you can also find a service to help you cope with the situation.  There are reliable techniques that can be beneficial.

Any attempts at self harm should be taken seriously and place a call to 911 emergency services immediately.

I find it alarming that if a person is experiencing mood swings along with any sudden drop of interest for any hobby that they enjoy, it could be a sign that they're suffering from depression. I have a friend that's feeling this way recently, and he's also trying to distance himself from us. I should suggest that he visit a mental health center for a checkup.

Thanks for the advice to seek out help from a health professional if you feel depressed. A friend of mine has been acting depressed for the past few weeks. I'll do my best to support my friend, and I'll help him look for a psychologist he can meet with so he can get professional help.

Thank you for mentioning how people with depression may try to avoid social gatherings and could even experience personality changes. I have noticed that my brother has not been attending my weekly barbecues ever since he got divorced last month, and I worry that he may be depressed since he tends to get irritable when I try inviting him. Maybe it would be best for him to consider seeking professional help in order to help him handle his depression.

It never occurred to me that excessive crying can be a symptom of depression. I do believe that it is important for us to be aware of the symptoms of depression as it will help protect our children and loved ones better. The other day my wife mentioned that she feels that she is depressed and she often cries herself to sleep. I do believe it will be beneficial for me to seek treatment for my wife.

I'm glad you explained that depression is something that can be treated. I am worried that I might be struggling with some depression. It would probably be a good idea for me to visit a psychologist so that I can figure out how bad it is.

Thanks for pointing out that depression is a medical condition that can be improved with treatment. As you said, there are lots of symptoms of clinical depression, like outbursts of anger. My brother has been very irritated and always angry since his wife left him last month. I guess we should ask him to look for a depression counselor on Monday to help him get through this tough time by listening to him and giving him feedback for his next steps in life.

Thank you for helping me to understand that excessive sleeping is a common symptom associated with depression. For the past couple of weeks, I have been sleeping a few extra hours each morning. I am worried that I might be dealing with some depression, so it might be a good idea for me to find a counselor to talk to.

I do appreciate that this post mentioned that when we know anyone who shows signs of depression, it is important that we seek a mental health counsellor. It makes sense as in doing so, we will ensure they get proper treatment. I will definitely keep this information in mind for future references.

Thank you for explaining that outbursts of anger over trivial issues could be a common sign of depression. My daughter has been showing this a lot more recently and I think might have happened last night which made me a little worried about her. I'll be sure to talk to her about this and see how she's feeling so we can determine if she's ready to talk to someone about everything so that she can start feeling more like herself again.

My little sister seems to be very depressed lately. I was interested in what you said about how eating disorders can be a sign of this, so can refusing to go to school. She is doing both of these things. She recently broke up with her boyfriend and it seems to have taken over. I think it would be a good idea to seek counseling for depression as soon as possible.

It was really informative when you talked about how continual insomnia and loss of interest can be symptoms associated with depression. I would imagine that loss of interest could make it hard to seek out help when you are really struggling with depression. If you are worried that you might be struggling with depression, it would probably be a good idea to seek out the help of a psychiatrist.

I'm glad you explained how depression is a condition that can be treated by professionals. The other day, I visited my parent's house and talked to my mom about my sister's mental health. My mom thinks that my sister's not eating and is missing school. We think that my sister's depressed, so I'll be sure to help my mom find a therapist soon. Thanks for the insight on depression and its symptoms.
